The amount of hands is not enough
Historically, marriage has been more about securing lineage, conneccting families and protecting property. (Totally regardless of genders or number of partners or even if they are alive.) In that sense, romance is a new thing that came a possibility only in the last centuries.
But of course, outside the dreams of religious conservatives, marriage can be exactly what we make it be, both personally and in law. Both can be adjusted. :)
