That clip is awesome! (Do all get familiar with Deus Ex!) … but to be honest, that would be a very, VERY good and proper case of use for the word hacking, so I would like to intentionally fail the joke. That’s what scientists (and engineers) do anyways by profession: they try to understand how something works – then you can modify it to make it better or suit totally new purposes. That’s what hacking is. Thus, you can use the word for other areas than IT as well.
For example, I’m a political hacker because I’m studying official (or sometimes “official”) processes through which our democratic system is supposed to work. The system can be bug checked, studied, pulled apart, abused, optimised and used for new purposes no one even thought about.
Hacking itself does not imply “breaking in”. Hacking _into_ something more so. Previously cracking was the term for a break-in and hacking was simply the pulling-apart, studying and developing phase.
