I have a hair problem. I have the typical hair of an Oriental (North Asian) so I have hair that is FOUR TIMES as thick as Caucasian hair. On top of that, being a man, I have even thicker hair than an Oriental woman. If I don’t gel my hair down, it will literally stand up like I have a straight Afro hairdo. To make things worse, my hair grows really quickly, so my scalp gets very oily although my hair gets dry from the cold dry air here in Europe. I used Head & Shoulders for years to make sure I don’t get dandruff and once I stopped using it, my dandruff comes back twice the amount in revenge. But when I do use Head & Shoulders, my hair gets really dry and they feel more and more like steel wires than hair.
I desperately needed help.
A friend of mine recommended Aveda to me. Aveda uses only natural ingredients so that it doesn’t contain any of the harmful chemicals that would penetrate your skin and cause cancer.
So I went to the Aveda shop in my city and based on my description, she insisted that I take these two products: Aveda Rosemary Mint shampoo and Aveda Shampure conditioner.
On their site, Aveda Rosemary Mint shampoo is for fine to normal hair, my hair is REALLY thick (Read above!!). But the woman insisted that I take it, because the rosemary, mint and lavender in the shampoo will nourish my hair back to health, which has been damaged by my liberal gel usage and the harm brought about by Head & Shoulders. On top of that, it will be strong enough to wash away the grease left behind by the rapid hairgrowth, and so, prevent the dandruff from coming back.
As for the conditioner, she said I shouldn’t use the one from the same series. She recommended the Shampure, because it works very well for straight hair and it is not oily such that it would give me more dandruff. She also said that it will soften my hair so that it would not be as unmanageable as it was.
My verdict:
I tried out both products for a month and I really hated them.
First, for the shampoo: It smells very minty and it feels extremely good having it on my head as I massage it into my scalp. As much as I wanted to believe how it can cleanse my scalp of dandruff and grease, it just did not work! I ended up having to use Head & Shoulders again every fourth or fifth day to get rid of the dandruff which came back. For something this high-end, I expected more than just the sweet scent. I expected it to work.
For the conditioner: This has to be one of the nicest-smelling conditioner I have ever used. The scent reminds you of the expensive spa you went to last year, and the smell lasts the whole day! I really really liked the smell. However, my thick Oriental male hair still felt like steel. The product claims to have a “Morikue” protein that nourishes your hair, but my hair did not shine and it did not get softer as the salesgirl claimed.
My conclusion:
If you are an Oriental, forget about Aveda. It is just not worth the money. I love the smell and I love how the smell makes you feel you are special, but if it only smells good and doesn’t do what it is supposed to do, then I might as well put some perfume on my head instead. Maybe these products are meant for Caucasians with finer hair, but they definitely did not work for me.
