The human breast ( udders) can out produce the average Holstein Dairy Cow. This is in no way intended to put a human being at the same level as that of a dairy cow. This is only intended as a way to compare, for educational purposes only, the milk volumes of two mammals. This will show that pound for pound a high milk volume producing woman can out produce the average specially bred dairy cow. (FOR THOSE THAT FIND THIS HARD TO BELIEVE, please see the medical study on MILK YIELDS Abstract published in the British Journal Of Nutrition. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3676208 The famous Holstein Dairy Cow was bred to produce huge volumes of milk daily. The average production of the typical adult Holstein cow is about 30 liters a day. This is about 8 U.S. gallons a day. Don’t forget this cow breed produces more milk than any other cow. The average lactating woman is about 130 pounds. The average cow is 1,500 pounds.
130 X 100 divided by 1500 = 8.7% Such a woman is therefore equal to about 8.7% the weight of the cow’s weight. To out produce the dairy cow the woman would have to produce say 9% of 30 liters which equals 2.7 liters of milk a day. That is equal to 95 oz., or 2.37 quarts, or .7 U.S. gal. From my years of experience, I have seen women produce far in excess of this amount. While the average woman with one child produces about 35 to 50 oz of milk a day, those who produce as much as 70 oz a day are fairly common. Milk output is determined by the baby or babies needs. The more the breasts are emptied the more they will produce. The dairy cow is milked often and on schedule to keep or increase production. That is why there are documented cases of women producing as much as 7 and more liters of milk daily. I have personally seen such high milk yields. These women for various reasons, such as wet nursing, pumping to donate milk, etc, have put demands on their breasts and the breasts have responded with high milk yields. This proves without a doubt that pound for pound there are women who can easily out perform the highly rated dairy cows. adultbreastfeeding.orgTEXAS WOMAN DONATES 415 GALLONS OF BREAST MILK This woman now holds the new record for largest milk donation, at 415 gallons or about 1900 liters. This too will be broken, as I know women who produce much more than this even after nursing their own child. Unfortunately, most do not go through the trouble of going on record!
