BDSM 101 - What does it stand for and what does it mean in terms of relationships?
BDSM is split into three categories, each of which represents a different approach to kink which most people will be familiar with:
B&D stand for Bondage and Discipline.
D&S stand for Domination and Submission.
S&M stand for Sadism and Masochism.
Every person has a slightly different combination of each of these elements, and being into one does not mean you must be into it's partner. I, for example, focus mostly on Domination. I have a passing interest in Bondage, and my interest in Sadism is only in terms of Humiliation. Inflicting physical pain doesn’t do it for me. Discipline is an area I find difficult because it links heavily into my job, and no one enjoys taking their work home with them.
I bore you with a list of my own interests only to show how different people can be into different fetishes in different degrees. When finding a partner within BDSM, it is important to find someone who is a strong match for your individual fetishes, but it is also important to find someone whose approach matches yours.
BDSM relationships are intensely powerful. Trust builds up incredibly quickly through a combination of the sub putting her safety in her Dom’s hands, and through him acting as an authority figure. This means that all parties must work hard to communicate actively and honestly with each other in order to maintain a safe and happy relationship.
Consider your own approach. Which areas of BDSM do you focus on, and what sort of Dom or Sub does it make you?
Yours, always;
